Choosing The Right Swaddle Blanket for Your Baby
Making the choice to swaddle your baby is the easy part, choosing the right swaddle blanket can be overwhelming, having many different kinds and brands to choose from. Some are sewn simply and others are sewn with buttons, velcro and other notions to keep your baby secured. There are three main kinds of swaddle blankets: the large square; the T- shaped with a foot pocket; the zippered in kind. There are just a couple of points to consider when choosing your swaddle blanket. A baby (unless he is extremely large) will do well in any swaddling blanket up to four weeks because babies do not move around too much at this stage. Any cutesy blanket that appeals to you should generally work well, keeping in mind the hassle of making sure all your velcro, snaps and notions are done up each time you wrap your baby in the blanket. After about 4 weeks when your baby starts to wriggle and stretch a little more forcefully is when you realize swaddle blankets are not created equal. 1. The square blanket *needs to be large enough so they stay swaddled and it covers them fully 45″ x 45″ is a really good size *needs to be stretchy so they stay secured and will not pull out their arms and legs while sleeping but able to unravel somewhat when they awake. A thermal cotton is a great choice for winter. 2.The T-shaped with a foot pocket *usually better when it is simpler, often older babies will not lay still while you are trying to do up snaps, velcro etc when they are tired and fussy. *needs to be stretchy so they stay secured and it is more comfortable for your infant. *needs to have a deep foot pocket, so your infant will not pull his feet out. 3.The zippered in kind *keeps your baby in well * downside - will make your baby frustrated when he/she awakes and is still completely restricted from moving. The other two styles will keep your infant secure while sleeping, yet will allow them to pull their arms out naturally when they awake if they choose to. I have tried different blankets and interesting enough I prefer the kind I have on my website (smile)! Snuggle Me Softly
