Spiritual Awakening – Brindavan Ashram by Pushpitha Wijesinghe
Summary
Brindavan near Bangalore is one of the ashrams set up by Sri Sathya Sai Baba who was a revered spiritual leader. Set in a neat compound it comprises of Sai Baba’s residence, the prayer hall, an institute of higher learning and an auditorium.
Named after a forest where Krishna spent his childhood, Brindavan in Whitefield near Bangalore is famous as one of the ashrams of Sri Sathya Sai Baba, a revered spiritual leader thought to have been one of the most spiritually influential people in the world. His other ashrams include the main one in Puttaparthi where he was born and another one in Kodai Kanal.
The Brindavan ashram is spread over a large well maintained area and comprises of several colourful modern buildings in varied architectural styles. Trayee Brindavan was Sai Baba’s residence whenever he came to Brindavan. A two storied pink and yellow building in the shape of a lotus it was constructed round a central hall with rooms around it and when Sai Baba was in residence, which was for three months every summer, he invited the students of the Sri Sathya Sai Institute for lively discourses held in the verandah behind the main entrance. The other buildings in the compound include the Sai Ramesh Krishna Hall with a seating capacity for 6,000 people, the hub of the compound where daily bhajans, prayer meetings and celebrations take place, the campus of the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning and its student hostel, and Sai Krishan kalyana Mandapam an auditorium where conferences and cultural programmes are held. A home for the aged and a state of the art 60 bed hospital though part of the ashram are located outside the complex.
The ashram follows a daily programme similar to other Sai ashrams. The day starts with chanting of Om that merges into morning prayers, chanting of the Vedas, morning devotional songs and twice a day bajhans and darshan with a break for lunch. When Sai Baba was present during these programmes, he walked among the devotees and later was taken in his wheelchair.
The ashram wakes up at 4 am and bustles with activity throughout the day winding down only after 9 pm. Accommodation, vegetarian meals and other requirements of devotees are made available onsite. Silence, introspection and dignified bearing are advocated on the premises creating an atmosphere of serenity and calmness.
