Drakensberg Mountains – Cleopatras Mountain Farm House Escape
Hidden away in the dramatic UKlahlamba Drakensberg mountain range in the Kamberg Valley close to Giant’s Castle, you’ll find Cleopatras Mountain Farmhouse. This exclusive Gourmet mountain lodge is 200km from Durban airport and 450km from Joburg international airport. I drove there from Joburg and the journey took me around five hours along the N3 toll road before coming off at Mooi River. From there, it’s no more than 30 miles and while the directions were very good, it is far better to undertake this section of the trip by daylight to make it simpler to pick up the landmarks that are described in the instructions.
In due course, I showed up but because it was after sunset, I wasn’t able to thoroughly delight in the beauty of its location until the next morning. I had also showed up far too late for the six course dinner which was a shame. There are 11 suites at Cleopatras and each one is unique. I checked into room 2, the Scandinavian room and it was gorgeous and reasonably spacious. It had been a tough day so I soon got into my bed that was warmed up by an electric quilt and went to sleep.
I got up early as I had a lengthy trip to the Zulu Battlefields ahead of me but first of all I wanted to explore the immediate area. The morning mist hung over the nearby mountain tops and I could see what a idyllic spot this was. I went to the breakfast room where a marvelous three course breakfast was dished up to set me up nicely for the busy day ahead. The chef at Cleopatras preps his food with flavour as his primary aim and I had to say that I was not let down. In fact, I can’t recall the last occasion I was served such a great breakfast.
Next there was time for a quick trip up to the top of the mountain though the view would be restricted. Nonetheless, it was clear enough to see that for those aiming to spend a bit of time out-of-doors and delight in superb food, Cleopatras is highly recommended as a place in the UKlahlamba to head to for a few days. Activities include things like walking in the Highmoor Nature Reserve, horseback riding, horse stud excursions & local adventures, fishing, helicopter rides, Bushman rock art, Crane rehabilitation centre.
Should you wish to head out driving during the day, there are more than 180 visits along the Midlands Meander from wood turners, to potters, to cheesemakers, to weevers and more.
