How To Do A Breast Self-Exam
First, stand in front of a mirror with your hands at your sides. Look at your breasts and check for any irregularities, like dimples or swelling.
Raise your hands over your head and hold them there. Check to see if this causes any unusually or uneven changes in either breast.
Lie down flat on your bed. Put a pillow behind your right shoulder. Slide your right elbow up toward your head and put your right hand under your head. Put the four fingers of your left hand together and explore your right breast, firmly pressing and using a circular motion. After you’ve gone completely around the breast, spiral inward and circle the breast again until every part of the breast has been explored and you reach the nipple.
Move the pillow behind your left shoulder. Examine your left breast using the four fingers on your right hand.
Sit up or stand up. Squeeze both nipples to see if any discharge occurs. If it does, or if you’ve felt any lumps, bumps, or thickening in either breast, see a doctor. Don’t panic, though – lots of things can cause these symptoms, and they don’t always indicate a cancerous or precancerous condition. Your doctor may order some simple tests that can help determine what is going on.
